The district is working in line with the national goals of promoting equity, increasing access to quality education.

• - Bugiri has 241 primary schools.
• - 95% of the primary schools are government funded.
• - 10 primary schools are privately run.
• - A total of 40 secondary schools, with 75% being private entities.
• - 10 secondary schools are government run.
• - 12 tertiary institutions with 5 being vocational, 4 being technical colleges and the rest are commercial colleges.

General Enrollment- Primary Grade

Universal Primary Education figures by December 2005 show that 139,100 pupils are in primary school with 43% of them being girls while 61, 412 are boys.

School drop out rates are still high and the quality of education is lacking. The sector faces challenges such as:

• - Need to build and expand the education infrastructure in order to accommodate and facilitate a better learning environment for the students.
• - More secondary schools are needed and the classrooms, desks and text books are few thus hampering the delivery of quality education.
• - Infrastructure is still poor especially on the islands of Wayasi, Sigulu and Hama.

Some organisations such as the European Union and Tilda (U) Ltd have constructed classroom blocks and improved sanitation in schools such as Kibimba Primary school.
