Bugiri
district is a green colourful district in the eastern region of Uganda and
located 160km from Kampala, Uganda’s capital.
A
district with 16 sub-counties including Sigulu Islands which is fully on the
waters of Lake Victoria. Sigulu with its multi-ethnic groups and a place where
all East African currencies are available and used economically.
On
arrival to Lugala landing site, one notices people boarding wooden boats
powered by boat engines heading to various destinations.
The
beautiful scenery is evident as one sails on the waters. The beautiful rocks,
birds and wildlife like crocodiles exist on the waters of Lake Victoria.
The
morning hour at the landing sites are usually calm and quiet as fishermen take
their rest. And in the afternoon work they spread their nets in preparation for
fishing which is usually done in the night.
Profile of Bugiri District
Bugiri
is bordered by Tororo to the Northeast, Iganga to the West, Mayuge to the Southwest
and Busia to the East. The district also extends into Lake
Victoria; 73% of the district is underwater. Further South, Bugiri
faces Tanzania
and Kenya
in the South East. Bugiri is one of the districts that make up the Busoga Kingdom
in Eastern Uganda.
Lying
along the Eastern Highway,
the future is flourishing for Bugiri as its location allows it to tap into the
Ugandan and Kenyan markets. It is inhabited by the Basoga people, a people with
an enviable pride in their traditions and their Kyabazinga- the King of the Basoga.
